You would never expect that this chilly port town, with its expansive docks and seafaring attitude, sits, not on the ocean, but on an inland sea. Granted that body of water is quite large and only the gods know how deep, but you’d expect these sailors to brave the oceans not so far west. However, from the time I’ve spent on both this sea and Meradin’s great ocean, I can tell you the salty waters west are much safer.
Arenloch is the largest city in the northwest reaches of the Sapphire Kingdom, but its ties to the throne are weak at best. Though it is one of the youngest cities in the kingdom, its population has surpassed that of Bal Azar. Its proximity to iron rich mountains and dense forest make it the most worthwhile town to defend in the wild north, and, as such, common folk flock to the safety it offers. The Shifting Tower specializes in illusion magic, offering much of the city’s protection. Orcs and raiding barbarians would rather attack any of the nearby towns, especially when the standing guard seems at least twice as strong as it truly is.
